Sigiriya photos and information
Sigiriya is an archeological site in the Matale District in Central Province of Sri Lanka. It contains the ruins of an ancient palace complex, built during the reign of King Kasyapa (477-495). It is one of the most popular tourist destinations. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1982. The Sigiriya rock is a hardened magma eruption of a long extinct and eroded volcano. These are standing above the surrounding plain, visible for miles in all directions. The rock itself rises 370 (m) and is steep on all sides, and in many places that stand out from the base. The plane is elliptical and has a flat top that slopes gradually along the axis of the ellipse.
