The Mayan city of Copan was a ceremonial center of government and the former Maya civilization. Currently, Copan is an archaeological site located in the Department of Copan, western Honduras, near the border with Guatemala. Located on the banks of the Copan River, it had eroded a significant portion of the eastern side of the acropolis. From the 1940's, the stream has been diverted to protect the archaeological site.
