Sharbat Gula's picture was published on the cover National Geographic in June 1985 and was photographed when she was 12 by photographer Steve McCurry in June 1984, due to his expressive face with green eyes. It was in the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in Pakistan during the war against the Soviet invasion, his parents were killed during the bombing of the Soviets in Afghanistan and she had to flee with her grandmother and brother. That cover became one of the most famous of the magazine and hit while more than 2,000 readers wrote to the magazine to ask about it. However, at that time nobody knew the name of the girl.
to me is very funny and very sad at the same time, observe how the passage of time has made this beautiful teen first picture, expression serious but frank and funny, has become this woman, though still young appearing older looking suspicious and distrustful, as if to show that life might not have been too easy or generous with her, that girl whose photograph would become in 2002 the most watched cover 114 years of existence of the journal "National Geographic".
also leave a link to the website of Steve McCurry (born in 1950 in Pennsylvania, USA) because it is really worth a look, have pictures that are wonderful: Steve McCurry PHOTOGRAPHY.
